Out of Sight

I’ve been on tour this week with Jenny Owen Youngs, my dear, dear friend. The two of us have many things in common, but our movie viewing history is not one of them. I discovered this while we were driving from Seattle to Portland, and I mentioned my deep love of Steven Soderbergh’s classic 1998 film Out of Sight. Jenny has never seen it. Ca...

Ranking of Kings

A couple weeks ago, I finished watching the incredible first season of “Severance.” It was a show whose popularity seemed to gather momentum as it went along. After the 6th episode, I felt like everyone was raving about it on social media. And rightly so! It was fantastic! But when you love a show enough, there’s this moment right after a ...

Snack Club: Dill Pickle + Almond

One of my all-time favorite sketches from Key & Peele is “Gremlins 2 Brainstorm.” You should just watch the whole thing, because it’s a masterpiece, but in it, a ‘sequel doctor‘ comes in to instruct the Gremlins writers’ to imagine new Gremlin characters. Around 3:07, one of the writers suggests, “Um, Electricity Gremlin?” To whi...

Dedication

Traveling with my dad can be frustrating. Over the last couple years, I’ve tried to ask him about some kind of dream trip that he’d like to go on. My treat. Let me give him a chance to visit anywhere in the world, in style; a gift of relaxation and sights unseen. Hawaii? Iceland? But it’s difficult to talk to my father in terms of what he ...

The cookie of my dreams.

A few years ago, while watching a particularly exciting season of Great British Bake-Off, I started thinking about a very important question: what would *my* signature cookie be? What flavors would it be inspired by? What story could it tell? One idea immediately leapt into my mind:

Stillness

It’s been a long time since I slept well. I know sleep is supposed to be a time to reset and recharge, but I’m often fighting it off, trying to get a little more done, or trying to squeeze a little more enjoyment out of the last moments I’m awake. Sometimes, though, I try to welcome sleep. It’s unfamiliar and odd, like a relative you hav...

Everything Is Alive

The podcast that brings me the most sheer joy to listen to is Everything Is Alive, by Ian Chillag. In it, Ian interviews inanimate objects about their existence, their feelings about the world, and their place within it. It's hilarious, charming, and full of unexpected and poignant insights. True story: I once teared up at an Everything Is Alive...

Home (and away)

I have a new song out today, called “Home.” It’s a duet with one of my favorite musicians, Jay Som. You can listen to it here. I also made a music video for it—my first time directing on a set, with a crew and cast and everything, which was exciting and a bit terrifying. You can watch that music video here.
